"Interactive Spaces, Interactive Media at MICA"

The exhibition Motion is developed from Interactive Spaces, a course taught by Mina Cheon of the Interactive Media department at MICA, with the assistance of Christopher Saah, a graduate intern from MICA's master of fine arts in photography and digital imaging program. The Interactive Spaces course looks at how interactivity transforms conditions of space and challenges meanings of place. In virtual and physical space, the interaction between bodies, histories, and technologies creates the identity of place . While the course addresses the public in diverse ways, the key component of the class is to investigate interactivity within and beyond the gallery, allowing students to partake in the exhibition experience as professional development and artist practicum. The Interactive Media department is one of the newest majors at MICA. Chaired by Esther Schooler, the program explores the aesthetic discourse between culture, communication, technology, and human interaction, providing a broad framework of inquiry for students to develop as independent thinkers. The major investigates multiple modes of publication including the art and design of Web sites, as well as varied art forms involving human interaction and computers expressed on-screen or off-screen, as performance or installation, and in any combination with traditional media.
